The Hartford Names David DeBerry to Head HFP Claims

HARTFORD, Conn., March 07, 2005 - The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: HIG) today announced it has appointed David S. DeBerry as vice president and head of claims for its Hartford Financial Products (HFP) organization, headquartered in New York City, effective immediately. He replaces Joseph Monteleone, who has resigned to become a partner at Duane Morris LLP, one of the nation's largest full-service law firms.

Before this new appointment, DeBerry served as vice president of HFP's financial services claims unit, which oversees claims on behalf of investment banks, mutual funds, insurance companies and investment advisors. In his new position, DeBerry, 48, will manage all HFP claim personnel and all claims arising under HFP's insurance products, which include directors & officers (D&O), errors & omissions (E&O), employment practices liability (EPL), fiduciary liability, employee dishonesty (Fidelity) and other management liability products.

"Dave's background and record in handling complex D&O and E&O claims issues assures that HFP Claims will continue to perform at the highest level of professionalism," said David McElroy, senior vice president of HFP.

DeBerry began his career at The Hartford in 2000 when The Hartford purchased certain assets from Reliance Group Holdings. Initially he headed HFP's Transactional Risk Insurance Division, which underwrites insurance for Representations and Warranties, tax liability and specific litigation. DeBerry began his career in a private law practice representing clients in both sophisticated transactions and complex lawsuits, and also worked as a complex claims director at AIG before moving to Reliance.

DeBerry holds a master's degree in tax law from New York University. He was admitted to the bars of New York and New Jersey and began practicing law in 1983.

DeBerry is also the author of a number of articles in professional publications and frequent guest speaker on financial products for professional organizations.
