About Us

The Emerging Markets Department staff has been together since 1991 when, as part of another insurer, it focused on excess and surplus markets providing directors' and officers' liability insurance for hard to place risks. The majority of these risks were emerging growth companies, i.e. companies undergoing substantial product development and revenue growth during their early years of operations typically in the high-technology and biotechnology industries.

By the mid 1990's, this group soon established a reputation as a premier underwriter of D&O for emerging growth and technology related companies and a market leader as measured by premium volume and underwriting expertise. The group also secured a spot as one of the largest primary insurance underwriters of initial public offerings (IPO).

In September of 2000, after joining The Hartford, we changed our name to Emerging Markets to better reflect our appetite for early stage hi-technology and biotechnology companies. We have developed considerable underwriting expertise as respects all stages of emerging growth company development - from seed capital and venture funding, through IPO and into the public company arena.

Over the last few years, Emerging Markets' geographical presence has expanded along with the build out of HFP's Middle Market Department. We now have underwriters in the field to assist Hartford Agents in addressing the management liability insurance needs of their small and mid-sized (for profit) privately held commercial clients, while continuing to centralize all public company underwriting in New York and Chicago.
